Esterfication Lab

Purpose: To synthesize an ester from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol

Materials: Isopropyl alcohol
methanol
salicylic acid
octyl alcohol
formic acid
acetic acid
concentrated sulphuric acid
2x200mL beakers
ice
water
eye droppers
test tubes

Observation: We created methyl salicylate which had a faint but noticeable minty smell. Problems that could have occurred to not create a strong scent could be that we did not put in the correct amounts of salicylic acid, methanol, and/or sulphuric acid. Not giving it enough time or too much time boiling and cooling could also affect the synthesizing of our ester.

Esters

Esters
-The functional groups:

Ethyl methanoate

-One of the simplest esters is ethyl mehtanoate

Esterfication

-Esters are formed by the reaction of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol

More Functional Groups: Carboxylic acids, Ethers, Amines & Amides

-Carboxylic Acids are formed by the function group:

-Use standard rules but change the parent chain ending to -oic acid
-The simplest carboxylic acid is Methanoic Acid

Ethers

-An Ether is an oxygen group connected to 2 Alkyl (Carbons)
-Name the smaller alkyl group first, then the second alkyl group, followed by ether

Amines

-Amines are function groups that contain a Nitrogen compound bonded to either Hydrogens or Carbons

Amides

-The simplest amide is ethanamide
